New Visiting Professorship at NTU to Champion Healthy Living

NTU Singapore has established the Lim Wee Chai Visiting Professorship in Health and Wellness, following a S$1 million gift from Malaysian entrepreneur and philanthropist Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai.

For Tan Sri Dr Lim, living healthily begins with discipline. At 65, he continues to uphold his belief that “health is wealth,” aiming to work productively until 90 and live to 120 by keeping fit physically and mentally. His gift to NTU reflects his commitment to sharing this philosophy with a wider community.

The professorship will bring distinguished faculty from renowned universities worldwide to NTU, where they will engage in teaching, research collaborations, and public seminars focused on health and well-being. Through these efforts, the initiative seeks to raise awareness and deepen knowledge of healthy living among both academics and the general public.

The agreement for the professorship was signed on 13 December 2023 at NTU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Novena. Witnesses included NTU President Professor Ho Teck Hua, NTU Vice President (Industry) Professor Lam Khin Yong, and representatives from Top Family Office Pte Ltd.

Professor Ho highlighted that the professorship aligns with NTU’s mission to address the pressing challenges of healthy living and ageing, noting that partners like Top Glove strengthen the university’s ability to create a healthier and more resilient world.

As founder and executive chairman of Top Glove, the world’s largest glove manufacturer, Tan Sri Dr Lim has long supported causes in healthcare and education. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Top Glove played a vital role in the global provision of life-saving PPE. Through its charitable arm, Top Glove Foundation, the company has also contributed RM32 million to 3,500 charities as of financial year 2023.

Reflecting on the motivation behind his gift, Tan Sri Dr Lim shared:

“I have always believed that we are blessed, so we are in a position to do good things and support worthy causes. One such cause which is close to my heart is the advancement of education, particularly in the area of healthcare.”

The Visiting Professors will be nominated and selected under the oversight of NTU’s Deputy President and Provost Professor Ling San.

Through this initiative, Tan Sri Dr Lim hopes to inspire healthier lifestyles, promote impactful education, and shape the future of healthcare.
