The National University of Singapore (NUS) has established the Lim Wee Chai Visiting Professorship in Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, thanks to a S$1 million gift from Malaysian entrepreneur and philanthropist Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai.
The cheque presentation and signing ceremony took place on 10 January 2023, with Professor Chong Yap Seng, Dean of NUS Medicine, receiving the gift from Tan Sri Dr Lim.
This new professorship is Tan Sri Lim’s first medical professorship in Singapore, marking an important milestone in his philanthropic journey. It is designed to strengthen NUS Medicine’s educational initiatives and research, while fostering bilateral collaboration between Singapore, Malaysia, and beyond.
Prof Chong expressed his gratitude, stating:
“We are proud to be chosen by Tan Sri Dr Lim to establish his first medical professorship in Singapore. Professorship positions are the cornerstone of academic advancement, and for NUS Medicine, they are key to driving important clinical research that inspires health for all.”
He also noted how Tan Sri Lim’s guiding philosophy — the “five wells” mantra: clean well, eat well, work well, exercise well, and sleep well — strongly resonates with the School’s evidence-based clinical research.
Tan Sri Dr Lim shared his hopes for the gift, saying:
“I am honoured to partner with NUS, one of the world’s most renowned universities, to establish this medical professorship. Healthcare and education have always been my lifelong passions, and I hope my contribution will support quality teaching, impactful academic and research programmes that benefit students, researchers, and the future of healthcare.”
NUS will soon embark on the process of selecting and appointing the inaugural holder of the Lim Wee Chai Visiting Professorship in Medicine.
Through this initiative, Tan Sri Dr Lim reinforces his commitment to advancing healthcare, empowering education, and shaping the future of medicine.
